Vaccinations are a critical part of preventative medicine for your pet. At Rankin Veterinary Hospital PC we offer a full range of vaccines for cats and dogs. Puppies and kittens go through a series of vaccinations before they are fully immune to the diseases that they are being vaccinated for. Once in adulthood dogs and cats should have routine vaccinations to boost their immunity. It is heartbreaking to see a puppy morbidly sick with Parvovirus and in extreme pain and know that could have been prevented by a vaccine or see a kitten dying with Panleukopenia and know that could have been prevented by a vaccine.

In order for vaccinations to provide immunity they must be given before a pet gets sick. Puppies and kittens are started on their vaccination series

at 6 weeks of age with vaccinations following at 9 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks. Some pets will like Rottweilers will need a fifth booster at 20 weeks because they often have a poor immune response to Parvovirus. Once a puppy or kitten is fully vaccinated as a juvenile they will need periodic vaccinations to keep their immunity high to diseases.

Dr. Rankin will vaccinate puppies and adult dogs with a combination vaccine which simply means there are multiple diseases in the same vaccination. Canines are vaccinated for Distemper, Adenovirus types 1 and 2, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus, and Leptospirosis v. canicola and v.icterhaemorrhagiae all with the combination vaccine. Canines also will be vaccinated for Rabies, Kennel Cough

(Bordetella), and bivalent Influenza containing H3N2 and H3N8 strains at the appropriate times in the vaccination schedule. Outbreaks of the bivalent Influenza are a recent occurrence the United States. Canines get yearly boosters on their vaccines.

Dr. Rankin will vaccinate kittens and adult cats with a combination vaccine  that includes Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, and Chlamydia psittici. Felines will also be vaccinated for Rabies and Feline Leukemia at the appropriate time in the vaccination schedule. Felines will get boosters every three years once they have completed the kitten series.

Most of the diseases we can vaccinate for are viruses. A common thought is  why do I need to vaccinate if my pet never goes anywhere or never goes outside? With viruses your pet can still get them and never leave your house. Maybe you go somewhere and are petting or handling other dogs and cats or a friend comes over that has other dogs and cats. You and your friend could be bringing a virus to your house on your hands or clothes and never know it. Keeping your pet up to date on vaccinations will help protect them from the unknown.

If you have a puppy or kitten, adult cat or dog that need vaccinations give us a call and we can schedule an appointment.
